Egyptian soldiers killed six gunmen during a shootout in Sinai as part of a renewed operation to crack down on extremist groups, Egypt Independent reported Thursday (November 3rd).
Police and army personnel raided 36 locations in al-Arish, Rafah and Sheikh Zuweid that were used by extremist gunmen to plan and conduct terrorist attacks, military spokesman Mohamed Samir said in a statement.
Six gunmen were killed and four other suspects were arrested in the raids, he said, while two machine guns and other weapons were found, in addition to military uniforms.
The new Sinai operation is being conducted by soldiers from the 2nd and 3rd Field Armies, supported by police.
