Four Egyptian policemen were wounded in an ambush Tuesday (February 5th) in the south-west of the country, in an attack claimed by the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS), AFP reported.
Gunmen ambushed a police checkpoint in al-Wadi al-Jadid governorate, a security source said.
The police "responded to the armed attack" leading to an "exchange of fire" with the assailants who managed to flee, the source said, adding that four policemen were wounded.
ISIS's propaganda agency Amaq claimed responsibility for the attack.
On Monday, Egyptian forces killed seven extremists in a shootout in the North Sinai provincial capital of al-Arish during a raid on their hideout, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported.
The Egyptian army is conducting a campaign against ISIS in the peninsula.
On Saturday, the military said it had killed eight extremists in the Western Desert.
