The "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) has announced the death of one of its leaders in Sinai, AFP reported Wednesday (October 3rd).
The Egyptian army killed ISIS leader Abu Hamza al-Maqdisi in an air raid, the group said Tuesday in a message on Telegram, adding that al-Maqdisi had been in charge of planning and training for the group in Sinai.
A security source told AFP al-Maqdisi had been killed, but the army has yet to confirm the reports.
"Abu Hamza al-Maqdisi is one of the ISIS operatives who took part in their operations against the army," the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
He was killed Monday in North Sinai’s Sheikh Zuweid, according to the source.
Elsewhere in North Sinai, a separate security source said Wednesday that police had killed 15 extremists during a raid in the provincial capital of al-Arish, in an exchange of fire at a farm.
