A Jordanian police officer was killed and another was critically injured in Maan on Saturday (August 5th) when their vehicle was sprayed with machine gun fire, the Jordan Times reported.
Police said they are searching for a 21-year-old suspect.
"One of our police officers, a sergeant, died on Saturday in hospital after a wanted person shot at him and another police officer while they were in their highway patrol vehicle in Maan marketplace," said police spokesman Amer Sartawi.
The suspect fled the area and an all-points bulletin was issued for his arrest, Sartawi said.
According to former Maan mayor Majed Sharari, the suspect had learned that police were looking for him two days before the incident. On Saturday morning, he went to a market with a machine gun and sprayed a police vehicle with bullets.
"Three police officers were in the highway patrol pickup truck when the attack occurred," Sartawi said. "Two were critically injured and the third was unharmed."
The victims were rushed to Maan government hospital, where one died.
The other, who remains in critical condition, was airlifted to King Hussein Medical Centre in Amman, Sartawi said.
