Jordanian police on Thursday (May 11th) arrested a man who reportedly fired live ammunition during a Wednesday wedding in Irbid governorate, which killed a 7-year-old Syrian boy and injured two others, the Jordan Times reported.
The incident occurred late Wednesday night in the town of Taybeh, said police spokesman Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi.
"Three people were hit by stray bullets, including the child, who died at the scene," he said.
A man was arrested and a weapon was seized, Sartawi said, adding that "the weapon was sent to the criminal lab for a ballistic match".
In 2015, Jordan introduced stiffer penalties against those who take part in festive firing, pledging to arrest any person who owns a gun without a licence or fires weapons for any occasion.
Individuals convicted of causing death by festive firing face up to 20 years in prison, and in cases of multiple fatalities, the shooter could face a life sentence.
