State of emergency extended in parts of Sinai

Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi issued a decree Tuesday (July 12th) to extend the state of emergency in parts of North Sinai for three months, effective July 29th, Egypt's Ahram Online reported.

The state of emergency was originally imposed in August 2013 and has been extended in increments. This is the eighth time it has been extended.

Hundreds of security personnel have been killed in the peninsula by extremist groups including "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) affiliate Wilayat Sinai, as Egyptian forces continue to target militants as part of Operation Martyrs' Right.

In the latest incident, a roadside bomb on Tuesday killed two Egyptian policemen in the North Sinai provincial capital of al-Arish, the interior ministry said.

Last month, the army said its ground, air and naval forces had killed 22 militants in parts of North Sinai as part of the ongoing counter-terrorism operation.
