Egyptian Army Chief-of-Staff Mohamed Farid on Thursday (November 15th) attended the primary phase of the “Arab Shield 1” joint military drills at Egypt's Mohamed Naguib Military Base, Ahram Online reported.
Participating in the drill, which kicked off November 4th, are the armed forces of Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait. Morocco and Lebanon are attending as observers.
Also attending were Chief-of-Staff of the Armed Forces of the UAE Hamad Thani Al Rumaithi, and the Chief of the Saudi Land Forces Fahd Abdallah Al Motier, as well as other Arab counterparts.
Farid praised the level of co-ordination and co-operation between the Arab forces participating in the exercise, which is one of the largest to involve the armies of Arab countries.
Egyptian army spokesman Tamer al-Rifaei said the drill aims to “develop and strengthen military co-operation between the Egyptian Armed Forces and the armed forces of brotherly Arab nations, and to develop joint Arab action in the framework of the challenges that face the region”.
The first stages involved theoretical lectures supported by practical exercises intended to unify operational concepts and better co-ordinate the execution of assigned tasks, he said in a statement.
