First electric buses hit Alexandria streets as part of eco-friendly transport plan

Fifteen electric buses will soon be running on the streets of Egypt's coastal city of Alexandria, Ahram Online reported Friday (November 2nd).

The new vehicles use chemical energy stored in rechargeable battery packs, which are less costly in maintenance and more environment-friendly.

"We started experimental operation for the first bus last week," said Khaled Eleiwa, chairman of the board of the Alexandria Passenger Transportation Authority (APTA). "This will last for three months, then 14 buses will operate immediately."

Tickets will range from 5 Egyptian pounds ($0.28) to 10 Egyptian pounds, depending on the destination.

Eleiwa said the target was to make Alexandria a green city by 2030.
