Lebanese parliament ends term, forms new government

With the mandate of Lebanon’s parliament set to end at midnight Monday (May 21st), the government convened at Baabda Palace for its final meeting before it turns into a caretaker government on Tuesday, Lebanon’s Naharnet reported.

The cabinet convened at the Presidential Palace for a meeting chaired by President Michel Aoun to discuss several issues, al-Joumhouria daily reported.

On Wednesday, the new parliament will convene under the most senior MP, Michel Murr, to re-elect Amal leader Nabih Berri as Parliament Speaker.

Upon his re-election, Berri will move from his parliamentary seat to the presidential platform to run the session to elect his deputy for a full four-year term, the daily said.

Meetings were set to intensify Monday before the parliamentary blocs launch nominations, after which attention will be focused on the naming of a new prime minister and the formation of the new government.

On Thursday, Aoun begins the binding parliamentary consultations for naming a prime minister in preparation for the formation of the next government.
