3 police, 2 civilians killed in North Sinai attacks

Three policemen and two civilians were killed Monday (October 16th) in the North Sinai provincial capital of al-Arish after militants attacked security posts in the city, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported.

"Armed terrorist elements" targeted security posts in 23rd July Street in the vicinity of second al-Arish police station, firing shots at security personnel and detonating several improvised explosive devices (IEDs), the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

According to the statement, a group of militants attacked a security post securing a bank, killing three policemen, the bank’s security guard, and a female bank client.

The militants stole money from the bank during the course of the attack.

Several other civilians were injured in Monday’s incident.

Police said they were able to safely detonate several IEDs planted in the vicinity of the bank, with security forces combing the area in search of the culprits.
