The Lebanese army continued pounding "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) positions along the Syrian border overnight, Lebanese media reported Wednesday (August 16th).
The military shelled ISIS posts on the outskirts of Ras Baalbek and al-Qaa during the night, the National News Agency reported.
Early Wednesday, the military continued to target intermittently extremist posts in these areas and in the northern Bekaa Valley town of al-Fakiha.
On Tuesday, the army said troops had advanced along the border with Syria, tightening the siege on areas controlled by ISIS.
In a statement, the army said the troops discovered bombs and explosive belts left behind by militants in areas captured on the edge of Arsal, along with the body of a man who they were not able to identify, Lebanon’s Naharnet reported.
On Monday, hundreds of extremist fighters and civilians returned to Syria from the Lebanon border area.
With the departure of the Syrian opposition group Saraya Ahl al-Sham and the former al-Nusra Front (ANF), only ISIS remains in the border area.
The army has been preparing for an all-out attack on ISIS positions along the Syrian border for weeks, massing reinforcements and pounding the area with artillery shells and rockets.
