Jordan's comprehensive national strategy for combating extremism is in the final stages of development and is expected to be wrapped up next month, the Jordan Times reported Wednesday (January 25th).
The strategy mostly targets young people, as they constitute 70% of the kingdom’s population, said retired Maj. Gen. Sharif Omari, who directs the Ministry of Culture's counter-extremism and violence programme.
Once it is endorsed by the cabinet, the strategy will be binding to all entities concerned with its implementation, Omari said.
The UN Development Programme will provide the expertise for the project, titled "Preventing Violent Extremism", country representative Zeina Ali Ahmad said.
The strategy will focus on combating terrorism socially and economically, she said.
