The UN Resident and Humanitarian Co-ordinator in Jordan has announced that humanitarian assistance will resume to thousands of Syrian refugees trapped along the border, The Jordan Times reported Tuesday (November 22nd).
The measure will allow an estimated 85,000 Syrians stranded in the border area near Rukban to receive aid after a months-long hiatus, the co-ordinator’s office said in a statement.
Jordan sealed off the area for security reasons following a June attack targeting Jordanian troops.
Since then, humanitarian agencies have been unable to deliver relief, except for water.
The resumption of assistance will consist of winter clothes and items to combat the cold, along with basic necessities and food rations, the statement said.
The delivery will be conducted through a newly constructed distribution point and a new facility under construction, comprising a health clinic, water tanks and a pumping station. The clinic will provide primary healthcare, maternal and neonatal services, according to the co-ordinator’s office.
The aid operations will be conducted in partnership with the UH High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Organisation for Migration, UNICEF and the World Food Programme.
