Chief-of-staff of Egypt’s Armed Forces Lt. Gen. Mohamed Farid on Sunday (May 12th) inaugurated Egypt's newest Gowind-class corvette frigate, Al-Moaz, into service, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported.
The frigate was built in the Alexandria Shipyard Company in co-operation with France, as part of a 1 billion euro ($1.12 billion) deal signed with France in 2014 to provide four frigates to Egyptian naval forces.
The deal calls for three corvettes to be built in Egypt under a transfer of technology agreement.
Egypt received the first corvette manufactured by the French side in September 2017. The second corvette was manufactured in Egypt and inaugurated in September 2018.
The latest inauguration was attended by Commander of the Egyptian Navy Vice Admiral Ahmed Khaled, the chairman of Alexandria shipyard, top ranking army and navy officers, and the general consul of France in Alexandria Janina Herrera.
Herrera praised the level of co-operation between Egypt and France, as well as the technical efficiency displayed by the Egyptian engineers and workers at Alexandria shipyard.
Khaled said the officers, soldiers, ships and arsenal of Egypt’s navy help protect the country’s borders and territorial waters against foreign and domestic threats.
