UN chief renews call for Hizbullah disarmament

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that Hizbullah is maintaining “sizeable and sophisticated military capacities”, Asharq al-Awsat reported Saturday (April 27th).

In a semi-annual report on the implementation of Security Council resolution 1559, Guterres called on Lebanon to take measures to prevent Hizbullah from possessing arms and to work on transforming it into a solely political party.

Security Council resolution 1559 was first adopted on September 2nd, 2004.

In his report, Gueterres stressed Lebanon’s commitment to the disassociation policy and noted that Hizbullah’s engagement in the conflict in Syria is in breach of this policy.

He welcomed the formation of Lebanon's new cabinet, and called on President Michel Aoun to develop a national defence strategy capable of addressing the need to achieve a state monopoly over the possession and use of weapons.
