Cairo Criminal Court on Sunday (March 3rd) sentenced one defendant to death and four to life in prison in a case known as the "October Terrorist Cell" for murder and terrorism related charges, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported.
The prosecution had charged the defendants with premeditated murder, attempted murder, joining an outlawed group and plotting violent acts in 2013 and 2014 with the aim of preventing state institutions from fulfilling their duties.
The men were convicted of killing a policeman and attempted murder of other police on guard at the Church of the Virgin Mary in 6th of October City.
Those convicted also were accused of assaulting members of the armed forces and the police, endangering the safety and security of the community, financing terrorist groups and obtaining illegal firearms and ammunition.
The verdicts can be appealed.
