A Cairo criminal court has sentenced six defendants to death and two others to life in prison over a deadly attack on a security checkpoint in Khosos, just north of Cairo, in 2016 which left one policeman dead and others injured, Egypt's Ahram Online reported Tuesday (August 28th).
The court sentenced one other defendant to 15 years, a second to five years, and a third to three years in prison.
The defendants can appeal the verdict before a higher court.
The defendants were convicted of establishing and joining an outlawed group aiming to disrupt the provisions of law and the constitution and preventing state authorities from carrying out their duties.
The court also found the defendants guilty of orchestrating terror attacks against police and army personnel, recruiting others to join a terror group, possession of illegal firearms and financing a terror group.
