12 killed, 28 injured in road accident south of Cairo

Twelve people were killed and 28 others wounded in a car accident in the southern governorate of Minya, Al-Ahram Online reported Thursday (July 19th).

The accident took place when a truck carrying cement smashed into another vehicle and a two-storey building along a major thoroughfare near Minya's Sharfa village, ministry of health spokesman Khaled Megahed said in a statement.

The other vehicle was carrying quarry workers.

Eighteen ambulances were dispatched to the scene and those wounded have been sent to nearby hospitals.

Last week, 10 people were killed and 25 injured when a bus crashed into a truck on a highway connecting the northern coastal cities of Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh.

The country's official statistics agency said in April that more than 11,000 road accidents took place in Egypt in 2017, down from around 15,000 accidents in the previous year.
