Global cartoon competition raises awareness on child marriage, domestic violence

The UN Population Fund Jordan (UNFPA), Seventh Circles and cartoonist Omar al-Abdallat have launched a global online cartoon competition, calling participants to submit original cartoons expressing the negative effects of child marriage and domestic violence, the Jordan Times reported Tuesday (November 21st).

As part of the 16 Days of Activism 2017, the competition was held from October 20th to November 20th on the Working Dreamers website, inviting people over 18 years of age of all nationalities to join.

"Showing an issue in one image is quite powerful, especially in today’s world, when people have a very short time to look into details," said Leana Islam, emergency youth officer at UNFPA.

Two winners will be awarded a $500 prize each: one by the online voters and the other by a jury afterwards, Islam said.

She said that 30% of the submissions have come from the Middle East.
