Egypt’s Ministry of Interior said Tuesday (July 11th) that police killed a leading member of the militant group Hasm during a shootout in Fayoum governorate, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported.
The ministry said the National Security Agency had received information that a meeting of the group’s members was set to be held in a village in Fayoum to plan terrorist attacks.
The slain leader had been responsible for recruiting youth and sending them to training camps affiliated with the group, the ministry added.
Hasm has claimed responsibility for a number of attacks against Egyptian security personnel in recent months, mostly targeting police checkpoints.
On Sunday, security forces in Giza reported that two members of Hasm had been killed in a shootout in 6th October City.
