Yemen's al-Qaeda detains 2 of its own for 'spying'

Yemen's al-Qaeda has detained two elements accused of being informants in a district of Abyan province targeted by air raids over the past week, AFP reported Wednesday (March 8th).

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) detained two of its operatives in Mawjan district on accusations that they were "spying", a local tribal leader said.

Abyan has been the target of air strikes as well as an AQAP attack on the army over the past week, with others strikes targeting Shabwa and Baida.

Yemen's war has created a power vacuum in Yemen, which AQAP has exploited to consolidate its presence in the south and east.
