Cairo is set to host an international Islamic affairs conference this weekend that will focus on spreading peace in the face of terrorism, Egypt's Ahram Online reported Monday (March 6th).
More than 30 delegations of religious leaders and representatives from Islamic institutions around the world will attend, said Minister of Religious Endowments Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa, who heads Egypt's Islamic Affairs Council.
The conference, held under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, will run Saturday through Monday.
Titled, "The role of political, religious and media leaders and decision makers in spreading peace in the face of terrorism", the conference will include six sessions and conclude with a declaration of recommendations.
Four hundred Islamic scholars from Egypt's Al-Azhar are set to attend, in addition to intellectuals from different Arab countries.
Al-Sisi has blamed outdated religious discourse for holding Egypt back and has called for "a religious renewal" in Islam, noting that radicalised thinking has become a source of destruction.
