UN announces truce in new attempt to end Yemen war

The UN has announced a new ceasefire in Yemen slated to begin early Thursday (October 20th), AFP reported.

President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi's government and coalition forces have said they will support the truce, but there has been no word yet from the Houthis (Ansarallah).

A cessation of hostilities will enter into force just before midnight on October 19th, "for an initial period of 72 hours, subject to renewal", UN special envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said in a statement late Monday.

Yemeni Foreign Minister Abdulmalek al-Mekhlafi welcomed the truce, which he said will be extended if the Houthis adhere to it, activate a truce observing committee, end a months-long siege of Taez and allow "unrestricted" humanitarian aid into the city.

This is the sixth attempt to establish a Yemen ceasefire.
