Yemen's Ministry of Local Administration is urging all citizens to pay Eid al-Fitr zakat to the General Administration of Zakat Duties before the end of Ramadan.

The ministry this year set Eid al-Fitr zakat at 250 Yemeni riyals ($1) per person, at the recommendation of religious scholars. This is 50 riyals ($0.20) higher than the amount set in 2016.

The special charitable contribution can be paid via various administrative units.

By the end of Ramadan, the ministry expects to have collected Eid al-Fitr zakat from all those who are capable of paying it, General Manager of Zakat Yasser Thabet told Al-Mashareq.

The head of family will pay the set amount for each member of his family, including children, Thabet said.

"This means that if there are four family members, he will pay 1,000 riyals ($4)," he said.

"Several zakat awareness campaigns were launched before Ramadan by scholars and in different media outlets," Thabet said. "These campaigns were targeting those required to pay zakat, in the form of money, crops, fruits, gold and so on, as specified by sharia."

"Al-Fitr zakat targets all employees, people with temporary income, and all those required to pay it," he added.

For government and private sector employees, zakat is deducted from employees' salaries by the General Administration of Zakat Duties.

"For non-employees, the collection tools are implemented by mosque imams" and local officials, he said.

It's rude to publish this in light of the circumstances in Yemen and the sufferings which have placed all under the poverty line. Some of the solidarity between Yemenis, by giving their zakat to the needy people, shouldn't be stolen. A state is a set of rights and duties, if rights fall, duties towards the state fall.
