Five Yemeni soldiers were killed and three wounded Sunday (July 16th) when gunmen with suspected ties to al-Qaeda opened fire on a military checkpoint, AFP reported.
The gunmen managed to escape after the attack on a checkpoint in north-east Shabwa province, a southern stronghold of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), an army source said.
Sunday's attack is the latest in a string of suspected AQAP shootings targeting military checkpoints and outposts in Yemen.
