UAE tops regional list on Rule of Law Index

The UAE came first in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and 33rd internationally on the World Justice Project's (WJP) Rule of Law Index 2016, released Wednesday (October 19th).

Jordan came in second on the regional list and 42nd internationally, rising from its previous position in 2015.

Egypt performed lowest on the regional index, with a global rank of 110 out of 113 countries surveyed.

The annual report measures how the rule of law is experienced by the general public worldwide, according to the WJP, an independent, multidisciplinary organisation working to advance the rule of law around the world.

Performance is measured using 44 indicators across eight primary rule of law factors, each of which is scored and ranked globally and against regional and income peers: constraints on government powers, absence of corruption, open government, fundamental rights, order and security, regulatory enforcement, civil justice and criminal justice.
