Egypt to establish higher human rights committee

Egypt's Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced Tuesday (November 13th) it will establish a permanent higher committee on human rights, Ahram Online reported Wednesday.

The committee will be responsible for outlining a national strategy for human rights and plans for implementing them. It will also draw up a unified vision to be promoted in international and regional forums, Egypt's state news agency MENA said.

The new body will compile Egypt's report that is submitted to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), and follow up on the implementation of the recommendations that Egypt accepts.

It also will be assigned to follow up on the implementation of Egypt's existing international obligations in respect of human rights.
