Egypt interior minister visits police injured in Sinai attack

Egypt's Interior Minister Mahmoud Tawfik on Monday (August 27th) visited a group of policemen injured during a Saturday attack on a checkpoint in North Sinai, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported.

The minister praised the "heroic acts" of the policemen, describing them as role models for "performing their duty and standing up for their homeland", according to a post on the ministry's Facebook page.

The minister expressed his appreciation for their sacrifices to deter anyone who wished to harm the security of the country.

Egyptian police on Saturday killed four individuals who attempted to attack a checkpoint on the coastal highway in the provincial capital of al-Arish.

Others involved in the attack managed to flee the scene, leaving behind explosives and weapons they had planned to use in the attack.

The "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack, with some media outlets reporting that several policemen also had been killed.
