Kuwait assumes UN Security Council presidency

Kuwait on Thursday (February 1st) assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of February, with Ambassador Mansour al-Otaibi setting out priorities for the month at a press conference, the Jordanian news agency, Petra, reported.

Presenting the 15-member council’s work programme for February, al-Otaibi said conflict mediation, preventative diplomacy, humanitarian issues and enhanced council working methods would be priorities for the Kuwaiti presidency.

He said the political, humanitarian and chemical weapons dimensions of the conflict in Syria would be discussed during three separate meetings, while the outgoing Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Yemen would brief Council members on February 27th.

Kuwait last held the UN Security Council presidency 39 years ago this month, during its 1978-1979 term as a non-permanent member of the 15-nation body.
