Egypt foils attempt to smuggle arms via Libya

Egypt’s Air Force on Monday (October 23rd) foiled an attempt to smuggle arms and ammunition into the country through its border with Libya, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported.

The operation was part of a series of raids and search operations conducted in the border region to track down the perpetrators of a deadly Friday attack on Egyptian police in the Western Desert.

The Air Force operation destroyed eight vehicles carrying arms, ammunition and explosive materials, and killed the drivers of the vehicles.

Meanwhile, Egypt's parliament on Sunday approved a presidential decree declaring a three-month nationwide state of emergency.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi issued the presidential decree on October 12th, one day after a previous three-month state of emergency expired.

Prime Minister Sherif Ismail described the move as a "necessary procedure".

He said the government would not resort to exceptional measures unless required to confront terrorism, adding that the law would not be used to curtail the rights of citizens or their public freedoms.
