Egypt army kills 5 militants in Sinai campaign

Egypt’s army on Tuesday (August 8th) killed five militants during a military campaign in central Sinai, Ahram Online reported Wednesday.

In an official statement, armed forces spokesman Tamer al-Refai said ground and air forces were able to demolish an underground hideout, killing the militants.

Three other militants were arrested, while a van carrying narcotics was confiscated, he said.

Egyptian forces have been battling "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) affiliate Wilayat Sinai on the peninsula as part of Operation Martyrs’ Right.

Meanwhile, on the Egyptian mainland just north of Cairo, two policemen were killed in a Tuesday morning attack on a security patrol in Menoufiya.

Assailants shot at the patrol in the town of Qowaysna, killing two policemen and injuring the chief of the town's police investigations unit, a security source said.
