Saudi blast car was carrying munitions: ministry

A car that exploded in the Qatif district of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province on Thursday evening (June 1st), killing its two occupants, was carrying munitions, AFP reported Friday.

Police spotted a stolen sports utility vehicle used "to carry out terrorist and criminal crimes" and took "necessary action", an interior ministry statement said.

"As a result, it caught fire and exploded," killing its two occupants, the ministry said.

Armoured and other police vehicles sealed off the area after the blast, a witness said.

Police found firearms and ammunition, some of which exploded as a result of the blaze, the ministry said, adding that an investigation is under way to reveal the identity of the two individuals.

"Two wanted terrorists were killed in the explosion," Faisal bin Farhan, an adviser to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on his personal Twitter account.
