Egypt embassy 'signficantly' damaged in Kabul blast

Egypt condemned “in the strongest terms” a Wednesday (May 31st) attack in Kabul that killed at least 80 people and damaged the Egyptian Embassy, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported.

The exterior of the embassy building was damaged in the blast that occurred when a massive truck bomb ripped through the city's diplomatic quarter.

One of the building's guards was hurt.

In a statement, Egypt’s foreign ministry said the explosion was very powerful, causing "signficant" damage to the Egyptian embassy's building and the ambassador's residence in Afghanistan.

The ministry is following the situation in Kabul to ensure the safety of embassy staff and assess the damages, the statement said.

Cairo stands with the government and people of Afghanistan against terrorism and calls on the international community to strengthen its efforts to combat it, the ministry added.

The attack is one of the deadliest in Kabul and comes at the start of the holy month of Ramadan.
