Egypt army stops ISIL road patrols in North Sinai

Egypt's military has foiled an "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) plan to establish a patrol to inspect cars in North Sinai, Egypt's Ahram Online reported Monday (March 27th).

In a Sunday statement, army spokesman Tamer al-Refai provided details of a 2nd field army operation which resulted in the killing of eight militants.

In the past weeks, ISIL affiliate Wilayat Sinai has released images of checkpoints on roads in several areas of North Sinai being manned by militants, the statement said.

The security forces arrested 22 individuals on suspicion of executing terrorist operations in the areas of Rafah and al-Arish in North Sinai, it added.

In a separate statement, released earlier Sunday, the Egyptian military announced it had killed an unnamed leading figure in Wilayat Sinai.
