Assailants kill 5 Egyptian soldiers in Sinai

The Egyptian army said that assailants killed five soldiers late Sunday (January 22nd) in Sinai, where security forces have been targeted in a spate of extremist attacks, AFP reported.

"The armed forces mourn with great sadness and sorrow the five martyrs who were martyred in Sinai at the hands of disloyal fundamentalist elements, enemies of the nation and religion," the military said in a brief statement.

The statement did not give details about the location of the attack or cause of the deaths.

The Egyptian army has been conducting a campaign to eradicate extremist groups from Sinai, foremost the local affiliate of the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL).
