Egypt army kills 8 militants in North Sinai

Egypt's army announced Tuesday (December 6th) that security forces killed eight militants and arrested 12 others in an operation in North Sinai, Egyptian media reported.

According to an army statement, security forces raided and destroyed a number of buildings militants had used as hiding places to monitor security forces in the area, along with a cache of explosive devices.

Meanwhile, Egypt's Grand Mufti Shawki Allam on Tuesday condemned the bombing of an Al-Azhar institute in North Sinai, Egypt's Ahram Online reported.

Unidentified assailants on Tuesday bombed an institute belonging to Al-Azhar.

There were no casualties, but a large part of the building was demolished.

The Grand Mufti said the "vicious" attack mirrors "the terrorists' fear of learning and clerics who spread the moderate [version] of religion that combats their extremism".
