Egypt army distributes food in Sinai and Upper Egypt

The Egyptian army has distributed one million food boxes to citizens in Upper Egypt and Sinai, Egypt's Ahram Online reported Wednesday (November 16th).

The distribution of food supplies came at the directive of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and is being carried out in co-ordination with the Ministry of Supply, the official military spokesman said in a statement.

The army will be distributing a total of eight million food boxes at the price of 25 Egyptian pounds ($1.60), nearly half the actual cost, the statement added.

Earlier this month, the army announced it would deliver eight million food boxes, the largest quantity of food supplied by the government to date at reduced prices nationwide in a bid to help citizens survive current economic hardships.

The move is aimed at "easing the burden on citizens", the army statement said.

Each box contains basic goods such as packs of sugar, rice, beans, margarine, tea and tomato sauce.
