Five al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) elements were killed in an airstrike in Yemen last week, AFP reported Wednesday (October 26th).
The October 21st strike occurred in a remote area of Marib, the US military's Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.
AQAP "remains a significant threat to the region", CENTCOM spokesman Army Maj. Josh Jacques said, adding that the group's "presence has a destabilising effect on Yemen, and we are working to deny them a haven from which to plan future attacks".
AQAP and the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) have exploited a power vacuum created by the current war to expand in Yemen, especially in the south and south-east.
