Jordan raids 'Captagon lab', arrests 8 suspects

Jordan’s Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) raided a laboratory allegedly engaged in the manufacture of Captagon pills and arrested eight suspects, the Jordanian news agency, Petra, reported Monday (January 15th).

The Public Security Department (PSD) said AND personnel have been working for months to track the suspects after receiving a tip-off about their activities.

During the preliminary investigation, security personnel identified one of the suspects importing chemicals used to manufacture detergents and hiring foreign nationals to treat these chemicals in preparation of the pills, the PSD said.

The suspect had begun to produce these materials in a rented facility.

According to the PSD, AND personnel on Sunday evening raided a hangar in an industrial area in east Amman, where they arrested one suspect and seized tonnes of various chemicals used in the production of narcotic pills.

Another team raided an apartment in Amman, which was used as storage for the pills, found around two million Captagon pills and arrested another suspect.

Security personnel also arrested six other suspects involved, including a foreigner.

Preliminary investigations indicated the suspects were allegedly planning to produce huge quantities for smuggling.

Investigations also indicated the seized chemicals were sufficient to produce more than 100 million narcotic pills. Investigations are ongoing.
