Egypt's Ministry of Interior on Tuesday (October 24th) announced the arrest of 12 Hasm elements in Fayoum governorate, south-west of Cairo, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported.
Members of the group had been planning to conduct a number of attacks within Egypt, the ministry said in a statement.
The suspects confessed to joining a group called Hasm Vanguards and received training on the use of firearms and preparing improvised explosive devices (IEDs), the ministry said.
The group had planned to conduct several simultaneous attacks across the country, the ministry said, targeting police departments and prisons, and assassinating public figures.
Among those to be targeted were police and army personnel and members of the judiciary.
Police made the arrests based on intelligence provided by the National Security Agency, seizing weapons and ammunition during a raid, the statement said.
