Iraqi forces foil attempt by ISIS to break Mosul siege

The "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) withdrew from three more areas between al-Refai and al-Rabie neighbourhoods and al-Nouri mosque in western Mosul on Tuesday (May 23rd), Iraq’s Joint Operations Command said.

"The Counter-Terrorism Service, army and rapid response forces have retaken three new sites and completed the full recapture of Hawi al-Kanisa," Command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.

ISIS attempted on Tuesday to break the siege on its elements in the last neighbourhoods still under its control, but that attempt "was thwarted", Rasul said.

"Iraqi aircraft shelled vehicles packed with explosives as they tried to open a hole in the military siege to allow ISIS fighters to withdraw and flee from Mosul," he added.

"Nine terrorists were killed, and three cars packed with explosives and a large truck were destroyed," he said.
