An elite Yemeni force backed by coalition airstrikes killed 30 suspected al-Qaeda fighters in the south-east of the country in a 24-hour operation that ended Wednesday (November 9th), AFP reported.
The force raided an al-Qaeda hideout west of the Hadramaut provincial capital of al-Mukalla on Tuesday in a "very successful" operation that lasted 24 hours, the army said in a statement.
The army said that 30 suspected extremists had been killed and several others captured, increasing a Tuesday death toll of six.
Four Yemeni troops also were killed and 12 were wounded in the fighting, the army said.
The extremists had been "planning to carry out terrorist attacks" in Yemen, the army said.
Yemeni and coalition forces ousted al-Qaeda from the port city of al-Mukalla in April, but its elements regrouped in the surrounding mountains and have carried out a series of attacks.
