Saudi king, Al-Azhar condemn Orlando shooting

Saudi Arabia's King Salman has condemned the Sunday (June 12th) killing of 49 people at a nightclub in Florida, AFP reported Tuesday.

Egypt's Al-Azhar also condemned the mass shooting in Orlando in a Monday statement, Egypt's Ahram Online reported, calling it a "heinous crime" that violates all tolerant teachings of Islam and urging Muslims in the West to set a model for "good manners and co-existence".

"We received with great regret the news of the armed terrorist attack in Florida and the resulting casualties and victims," Salman said in a message of condolence to US President Barack Obama.

"We condemn and denounce this disgraceful criminal act which is not accepted by religion or international norms and conventions," he said.

The "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) which also has claimed attacks within Saudi Arabia, said gunman Omar Mateen acted as one of its "soldiers" in Sunday's rampage.

But FBI chief James Comey said there was no indication of a plot directed from outside the US, and he was confident the gunman had been "radicalised" while consuming online propaganda.

Saudi Arabia's interior ministry said Mateen had twice travelled to the kingdom to perform the umrah pilgrimage, in 2011 and 2012.

In his message, Salman stressed "the importance of the concerted efforts of the international community to respond to all acts of violence and terrorism".

Egypt's Dar Al-Ifta also deplored the Florida rampage, Ahram Online reported.
