Egyptian police kill 9 militants in Greater Cairo shootouts

Egyptian security forces killed nine militants in raids on two hideouts in Obour city in Qalyubiya and 15 May city in eastern Helwan, Egyptian media reported.

"Among the terrorists killed in the raids was Mahmoud Gharib Qassem, known by the alias Khalaf al-Dahsoury," the interior ministry said in a statement.

The statement said Qassem was a Lewaa al-Thawra leader, and had been involved in the assassination of Brig. Gen. Adel Rajaei in October 2016 and an attack on al-Egiezy checkpoint in Menoufiya governorate in August 2016.

Two police officers were killed in the checkpoint attack, the ministry said.

"Security forces seized six automatic rifles, two sniper rifles as well as nitrate, electric circuits and detonative charges," the ministry statement said.
