Egypt says 4 suspected extremists killed in Sinai

Egyptian forces killed four suspected extremists in North Sinai allegedly involved in a deadly attack on a police checkpoint, AFP reported Saturday (June 8th).

The interior ministry said the suspects were killed in a shootout as security forces raided a building used as a hideout in the provincial capital of al-Arish, and three assault rifles and an explosive vest were seized.

Since Wednesday's attack, claimed by the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS), in which eight policemen died, security operations had by Saturday killed a total of 26 "terrorists", according to the ministry.

The Chief of Mission and Chargé d'Affaires of the US in Egypt Thomas Goldberger on Sunday reaffirmed that Washington stands with Egypt in fighting back against terrorism, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported.

"The murderous attack that killed so many young police conscripts and their officers in North Sinai on the first day of Eid is another example of the vicious terrorism to which Egypt has been subjected," he said in a social media post.

"The USA stands with Egypt in fighting back against this evil."
