UAE to deposit $250 million in Sudan's central bank

The UAE announced Sunday (April 28th) it would deposit $250 million in Sudan's central bank as part of a support package for the country following the overthrow of longtime leader Omar al-Bashir, AFP reported.

The government-owned Abu Dhabi Fund for Development signed an agreement with the Sudanese central bank "confirming the deposit", the Emirati news agency, WAM, reported.

Last week, Saudi Arabia and the UAE announced $3 billion in financial aid for Sudan.

The two Gulf states pledged to inject $500 million into the Sudanese central bank and $2.5 billion to help provide food, medicine and petroleum products, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The deposit for the central bank was aimed at shoring up the Sudanese pound, the SPA said.

In recent years Sudan has been hit by an acute lack of dollars, a key factor behind the nationwide protests that led to the army's toppling of al-Bashir.

Sudan plays a key role in the regional interests of Saudi Arabia and its allies, siding with Riyadh against Iran and providing troops to the Arab coalition fighting in Yemen's war.

An article entitled: Sudan between the hammer and the anvil. By Mahmoud Marghani Moussa. Sudan is a kind country which has missed development for many years. It has been living under ignorance and backwardness in spite of the different kinds of governments it has had. None of its rulers came up with any initiatives to rescue this resource-rich country from its social and economic backwardness. As a result, there came the split and division, and the South split from it. This is a catastrophe that no wise or prudent person could possibly accept. When the people arose and woke up from their sleep to live like other peoples around the world, they faced procrastination and delays. However, they didn’t lose hope and insisted, although the powers of injustice were in the lookout for them to force them to keep silent and accept the status quo. Then came fire and iron. However, when fire eats up something, it doesn’t have any calculations; it just eats up anyone, friend or foe, on its way. Leave the people's will to triumph. Leave the will of the Sudanese people to move ahead and take its place on the path of the straight with free, fair elections that wouldn't exclude anyone or waste anyone's rights. This is a right that only the ungrateful can deny.
