UK affirms backing for Lebanon government, army

Lebanese President Michel Aoun on Thursday (April 18th) met with British Chief of the Defence Staff Nick Carter at the presidential palace in Baabda, Lebanon’s Naharnet reported.

Carter reiterated Britain’s "continued support for Lebanon’s government and its armed forces", the presidency said in a statement.

In February, the UK made a decision to outlaw the political wing of Hizbullah. It announced it would seek to make membership of the party or inviting support for it a crime.

But UK officials have asserted the move will not impact the Lebanese government or its people.

British Minister of State for the Middle East at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Alistair Burt said "British ties with Lebanon will remain intact despite the British decisions against Hizbullah".
