Syria to release 8 Jordanian detainees following kingdom’s protest

The Syrian embassy in Amman announced Monday (April 8th) that Syrian authorities will release eight Jordanians detained in Syria, The Jordan Times reported.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry said it received an official notice from the embassy confirming the Syrian authorities' decision to release eight out of more than 30 Jordanians arrested in the northern neighbour, a ministry statement said.

The Jordanians to be released include three citizens who have been detained since the reopening of the Jaber-Nassib border crossing in mid-October; four who were arrested before the reopening and one who has already been released but is awaiting measures for his return to be processed by the Jordanian Embassy in Damascus.

The decision was taken days after the ministry summoned Syrian charge d’affaires in Amman Aymen Alloush for the fourth time and demanded that the Syrian authorities release the Jordanian citizens who have been held without clear reason.

Jordanian foreign ministry spokesman Sufian Qudah said the ministry continues to follow up with Damascus to release the other detainees and identify the locations where they are being held.

Since the reopening of the shared border between the two countries in mid-October, Syrian authorities have arrested more than 30 Jordanians who had crossed into Syria "for tourism or a visit", according to the ministry.
