Egypt seizes illegal drugs from ship off Red Sea coast

Egyptian security and naval forces have seized a large shipment of drugs worth more than two billion Egyptian pounds ($115 million) aboard a ship off the Red Sea coast, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported Thursday (April 4th).

A "dangerous" gang of seven foreigners and two Egyptians were planning to smuggle two tonnes of heroin and 99 kilogrammes of crystal meth into the country aboard a European-flagged ship, the interior ministry said in a statement.

Naval forces intercepted the ship, arresting its crew of seven foreigners, the ministry said, without specifying their nationalities. Authorities are still hunting the two Egyptians.

The ministry described the seizure as "one of the biggest blows to drugs smugglers".
