Egypt FM discusses counter-terror efforts during US visit

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Tuesday (March 26th) stressed the importance of continuing US support for Egypt to curb terrorism and bring peace and stability to the Middle East, Ahram Online reported.

The minister's comments came during meetings in the US to review recent developments in Egypt, as well as security and economic challenges, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Hafez said in a statement.

In a meeting with US senators, he affirmed the importance of Egypt-US strategic relations, and discussed the US military and economic assistance programme for Egypt, the spokesman said.

He also stressed the importance of continuing the US support for Egypt in line with the increased challenges it is facing.

The talks were positive and showed a mutual desire to achieve greater understanding between Egypt and the US, the spokesman said.

Shoukry also met with chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East, North Africa and International Terrorism Ted Deutch, and with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

During the meeting with Pompeo, the two sought greater co-operation between their countries to ensure stability in the region and discussed ways to boost mutual co-operation and strategic partnership, the foreign ministry said.

They also sought to bolster efforts to "confront regional and international threats and to achieve stability in the Middle East".
